Justice Department Sues San Jose for Unconstitutional $1600 Firearm Permit Fee

Today, the Justice Department filed suit against the City of San Jose, California, and the San Jose Police Department for charging private individuals unreasonable fees to exercise their Second Amendment right to lawfully carry a firearm. At nearly $1,600 per license, the City’s application fee to carry a firearm is the highest in the nation. Indeed, San Jose’s fee towers over those imposed by the country’s biggest cities. New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Chicago all charge a small fraction of San Jose’s fee. The Supreme Court has held that “exorbitant fees” such as San Jose’s violate the Second Amendment because they deny ordinary citizens their right to carry firearms for self-defense.

Rethinking Robot Safety in the Age of AI

This article is brought to you by VicOne . Robot safety has traditionally asked: Can a machine remain safe when something goes wrong? Physical AI raises a harder question: Can a machine remain safe when an attacker changes what it sees, decides, or does even when nothing appears to have failed? As AI and robotics continue to advance at an unprecedented pace, modern robots perceive through multimodal sensors, interpret context using AI models, and translate those interpretations into physical action. As they move into dynamic environments, their safety increasingly depends on the integrity of the data guiding their decisions. That dependence creates risks that conventional safety assessments may not fully capture. Recent research has demonstrated that manipulating what a robot sees, hears, or interprets can influence its behavior without requiring direct control. Such manipulation can occ

Review: Royal Underground troupe’s satirical ‘POTUS’ draws laughs in Berkeley

“POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive,” onstage in Berkeley’s Live Oak Theater, may be just satirical enough, with its thinly veiled references to the current White House.   But the chaotic all-woman, two-act farce may be a tad too over-the-top. While it’s happily missing the rapid-fire slamming of doors, the foundation of farce, the characters bellowing and yelling at the same is excessive. Still, all seven […] The post Review: Royal Underground troupe’s satirical ‘POTUS’ draws laughs in Berkeley appeared first on Local News Matters .
