Source-Cited Report Format Note

A standards note on when a source-cited report is appropriate and what sourcing should appear with it.

Editorial source report illustration

Source-cited reports are used for developments that can be stated directly, sourced clearly, and updated quickly without copying third-party article bodies.

A source-cited report should:

  • identify and link the primary source,
  • explain why the development matters,
  • distinguish reporting from commentary or aggregation.

A source-cited report is a format for attribution-forward coverage, not a substitute for original field reporting.
